Melanie Phillips is a qualified social worker with 39 years’ experience in safeguarding and child protection. She delivers training, consultancy and supervision to managers and practitioners in children’s social care, health, police, probation, education and the 3rd sector. She was a member of the Advisory Group that developed the Framework for Assessment of Children in Need in 2000 and co-wrote a chapter in the Practice Guidance to the Assessment Framework, along with 13 other publications. She has experience in working on safeguarding with adult mental health, CAMHS and Emotional Wellbeing Services. She has worked as part of social work improvement initiatives in Rotherham and Jersey States following failed Ofsted inspections/audits and also undertakes investigations into alleged professional misconduct under disciplinary procedures where there is a safeguarding issue. She was an independent chair for a London LSCB and has chaired, co-ordinated and disseminated serious case reviews. She is currently working on a research project with the Race Equality Foundation for the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse and is about to start a research project with the Centre of expertise on child sexual abuse also with the REF.
